The history of the small Baltic state of Estonia with its capital, Tallinn, is one of a struggle for independence in the face of its more powerful neighbours.
Estonia never became fully assimilated into the Soviet Union from whom it regained its independence through the peaceful "singing revolution" in
1991. Since then it has gone from strength to strength joining NATO and the EU and adopting the euro as its currency in January 2011.
Despite its troubled past, Tallinn's beautiful 15th century old town has remained largely untouched and unspoilt offering a wealth of sights to the tourist
wishing to delve into the city's fascinating history.
Tallinn acquired the status of European City of Culture in 2011.
