ANN BIRCHALL

THE ORIGINAL OLYMPIC GAMES

This talk traces the origin and early development of the Games which began traditionally in 776BC at ancient Olympia in Greece. There are marked similarities to, but some surprising differences from the modern series introduced in 1896. Lavishly illustrated by classical art – fine painted vases and sculpture in clay, bronze and marble, the lecture will mark the next Olympics in London in 2012.

Dr Ann Birchall is a Professional archaeologist of international reputation, formerly Assistant Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum; has excavated at home and abroad, including underwater. Author of books and articles, broadcaster on radio and TV – wrote and presented an award-winning two-part BBC TV documentary of her underwater excavation of HMS Colossus; adviser for BBC TV’s ‘China’s Terracotta Army’. Guest Speaker at functions all over the world including London’s Woman of the Year Lunch.
